CYPHER-16
Interview Hello! If you'd like to start by telling us who you are and what you do in CYPHER16? We are a 4-piece symphonic dance metal band based in London, England. We consist of Jack Doolan (guitars/vocals/synths), Julian Shiu (guitars), Tom Clarke (Bass guitars) and Chris Woolams (Drums). We mix all sorts of types of metal music with many other genres of music such as classical and more recently, electronic music!
And what exactly do CYPHER16 sound like? That’s a very good question, and frankly, one we can’t actually answer! I think there are elements of many different artists in our music but every song is very different, so it’s not possible to pigeon-hole us! We tune to drop – A, so our sound is pretty heavy but there’s a lot of subtle melody in there too! Music that everyone should check out!
Who are your biggest influences? Personally I’m a big fan of such bands as Metallica, Nine Inch Nails, Meshuggah and Mastodon, but we all come from different musical backgrounds and I know Julian, Tom and Chris would have different artists they admire.
If you had to give just one reason, why should someone come to your show and check you out? Because, unlike pretty much every band that we hear at the moment, we’re doing something subtly new and different and it’ll be a unique experience! I have to admit that I’m very unhappy and disillusioned by the current music situation and I’m constantly striving to bring new ideas with Cypher16 that people can listen to and think “wow, that is a bit different!”, but still really get into and enjoy! We are seen as a very heavy band, but we do play in front of many “non-metal” audiences, many of whom come up to us afterwards having really enjoyed the show, because it’s just a bit different from what they’ve seen before!
Any plans to head up north for some shows? If you play somewhere like York or Leeds we could do an audio interview! Definitely, at the moment we’re just waiting for our EP release to be finalized in accordance with our record label, Constant Evolution Records, and then we’ll be booking a nationwide tour – we would love to come and do an audio interview with you!
Moving on to a few random questions now... In the event of a zombie outbreak, what is your weapon of choice and why?
Ok, Julian has the answers to these ones! In Chinese mythology, salt would have a corrosive effect on a vampire’s skin. Either that or a flamethrower.
The MIBL sponsored question, Pirates vs Ninjas, who kicks the most ass and why? Ah, the age-old question. Shurikens are way more deadly than a pirate’s hook! And besides, pirates only have one foot, whereas ninjas can fly!
This question will no doubt get the answer which is expected, but who was the worst actor to play Batman?
Well, I’m too young to remember the earlier renditions, but dare I say Val Kilmer? He’s awesome in True Romance though, so give credit to the man.
Right, now that’s out of the way, what are your overall intentions and ambitions with the band? I believe that we can go a long way with this band, and I fully intend to do this for the majority of my life. The way things are going, we’re headed for international tours and big shows, multiple releases, you name it, we aim to do it! I hope that the people who have heard us and like us will remember who we are, and remember how far we’ve come already!
Finally, what does the near future hold for CYPHER16? Well, as I said earlier, we’re just waiting for our EP, “The Man Of The Black Abyss” to be released into the world, shortly after which we’ll be embarking on a nationwide tour of the UK. We’re also getting several requests to go and play abroad so we’ll try and get to as many of those as we can too, so international fans, do not fear!
